There are also a small number of maths schools. These are specialist free schools for the most mathematically able 16- to 19-year-olds.

Alongside free schools there are university technical colleges (UTCs) and studio schools. These are mainly for 14- to 19-year-olds.

Data protection: privacy notice model documents

Guidance

Providing accessible information to individuals about the use of personal data is a key element of the Data Protection Act 2018 and General Data Protection Regulation.

The most common way to provide information is through a privacy notice.

The department provides suggested wording that schools and local authorities may wish to use. You must review and amend to reflect local needs and circumstances, as you will process data that is not solely for use within data collections.

Early years apps pilot: home learning environment

App developers can now apply to have their early years literacy, language or communication app reviewed by an independent educational and technical panel. Apps that meet the specified criteria will be awarded a DfE quality mark.

This guide describes how business professionals working in schools can join or create a school business professional network. Networks help professionals to connect and share information.

The school business professional networks directory includes groups that provide peer-to-peer support to help with a broad range of work-related activity, including buying for schools.

You can find potential networks by regional schools commissioner (RSC) region. Inclusion in the directory does not constitute a recommendation by the Department for Education.

Understanding the educational background of young offenders: summary report

These are the headline results from a data sharing project between the Department for Education (DFE) and the Ministry of Justice (MOJ). The analysis focuses on those young offenders sentenced in 2014 matched to DFE data.

The amendment adds a breakdown of education characteristics by a more granular categorisation of custodial sentence lengths.

Condition improvement fund (CIF) application outcomes: 2019 to 2020

Guidance

The Department for Education has published the CIF 2019 to 2020 outcome. This will provide funding of £433 million for 1,412 projects at 1,209 academies and sixth-form colleges.

The DfE contacted all applicants to inform them of the outcome of their application. Further information setting out next steps for successful applicants and feedback for those that were unsuccessful will be provided in due course.

Condition Improvement Fund

Guidance

The Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) is an annual bidding round for eligible academies and sixth-form colleges to apply for capital funding. The priority for the fund is to address significant condition need, keeping academy and sixth-form college buildings safe and in good working order. This includes funding projects to address health and safety issues, building compliance and poor building condition.

CIF also supports a small proportion of expansion projects. These are for academies and sixth-form colleges rated good or outstanding by Ofsted that can demonstrate a need to expand.

Asbestos data collections

Research and analysis

As part of the asbestos management assurance process (AMAP) data collection, DfE asked schools to provide information about their asbestos management practices. This included confirming they were compliant with the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.

This report covers information provided by schools and their responsible bodies between 1 March 2018 and 15 February 2019. You can use the spreadsheet to see which schools and responsible bodies participated in the AMAP.
