About the DfE Funding

The Department for Education (DfE) aims to build the capacity of governing boards across the country through a focus on supporting chairs to drive change in their boards and professionalising clerking to support boards to be effective and efficient.

To achieve this vision, the DfE have endorsed GovernorSpace and are providing all of the vital funding to deliver the training and mentoring. The funding will be available to access from January 2018 to 2020 and is available to all schools across the eight Regional School Commissioner (RSC) regions of England.

About GovernorSpace

GovernorSpace, powered by Entrust Support Services, is a dedicated space for Governors and Clerks across England.

Once registered, you will be guided through a personalised process of self-evaluation and online professional development including training and mentoring, helping you to manage and achieve a step change in the quality of governance.

Self-Evaluation

The self-evaluation tool, based on the Competency Frameworks for Governors and Clerks, is easy to use and can be completed at a time and place that suits you.

Available anytime and anywhere there’s an internet connection, you will be able to login and access valuable evidence for Ofsted, highlighting knowledge of your own strengths and areas for development. This can be used to clearly identify strengths and areas for development that feed into your Governance Development Plan.

Professional Development

Once you have completed your self-evaluation, you will be assigned credits to spend on your dedicated training based on your school and role.

Governing Boards located in the Department for Education’s opportunity areas and either rated by Ofsted as Requiring Improvement, or rated Good or Outstanding but identified as coasting, will receive 18 credits to use on interactive webinars, bespoke webinars or mentor support.

Governing Boards of MATs or Federations will receive 18 credits to use on interactive webinars, bespoke webinars or mentor support.

All other Governing Boards in England not identified above will receive 6 credits to use on interactive webinars, bespoke webinars or mentor support.

Clerks will receive 5 credits to use on interactive webinars.

Once you have your credits, you can then use them to book professional development activities including:

Interactive webinars from a suite of titles linked to the competency frameworks.

(1 credit = 1 place on a webinar)

Bespoke webinars for your whole board at an agreed time.

(6 credits = 1 bespoke webinar)

Mentor support.

(3 credits = 1 mentoring session)

Mentor Support

Throughout the process, you will receive one-to-one phone support from one of our trusted experts – many of whom are national and local leaders of education and/or governance and who can evidence the impact they have in schools. They will support you in effectively developing your board.

You will also gain access to GovernorConnect, a database to facilitate peer-to-peer support, and GovernorRecruit, a place to advertise and search for Governor vacancies.

Evidencing Development

The process concludes with a second self-evaluation, evidencing development in Governance over time and highlighting any remaining development needs.

Taking two to three terms to complete, GovernorSpace will become a key driver for change, creating vital networks of support and promoting long-term development for both you and your school.
